Tahiti vs. United Arab Emirates

Tahiti vs. United Arab Emirates

Matches for the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup 2013 are certain to fire up the Tahua To’ata Stadium in Papeete. They will, perhaps, serve as the highlight for host country’s 2013 history. That is not only because the island will host all fixtures, but also because Tahitians themselves will see their own players compete in the tournament. On September 19, the Tahiti team will battle out against UAE in an effort to advance to the knockout stage. For both sides, this will be a highly interesting tourney.

The United Arab Emirates are a strong pack of beach soccer players, having been crowned winners twice in the AFC Beach Soccer Championship. These victories later gave them ticket to participate in the 2007 and 2009 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cups. But Asian powerhouse they may be, the Emiratis perform less spectacularly in such global tournaments. They have never gone past the group stage in the World Cup, having settled only in the third or fourth spots in their cluster. In fact, even their road to the qualifications this year has been rigorous. Marcelo Mendes’ men succumbed to Iran in the semi-finals 2-3 before regaining their composure when they won over Australia 3-2 in the third-place playoffs.

Of all participants in the FIFA global event, host nation Tahiti may have the greatest pressure to overcome. They are not required to win the whole thing, but it would be dismaying if they lose in the competition very early. The 2011 tournament gave Teva Zaveroni’s men their best performance so far, having landed third in the group stage. While they failed to advance to the next round, they did impressively well in the qualifications. The side thrashed Fiji in the earlier round with an aggregate score of 6-5, and later in the finals, slammed regional favorites Solomon Islands on a narrow, and very surprising, 4-3 finish.

It’s a battle between Pacific fighters and Persian Gulf warriors. UAE flaunt a much riper experience than the host nation, but Tahiti have prepared really hard to overthrow any opponent to come their way. In other words, this match will be a steep one, but UAE will remain as the favorites to win.
