World Cup Qualifications (CONMEBOL) Preview: Colombia vs. Ecuador

Colombia

Current rankings already provide Colombia and Ecuador potential places for the finals in Brazil next year, landing second and third, respectively. To complete the home-away arrangement of the CONMEBOL qualifying format for the World Cup, the two sides will have their second meeting on September 8 (matchday 15) at the Estadio Metropolitano Roberto Meléndez in Barranquilla. Their last match was more than a year ago, where then-home Ecuador emerged winners 1-0.

Past qualifying matches

Both sides have performed quite well during the earlier rounds of the FIFA World Cup 2014 qualifications, with Colombia just a little more in shape than Ecuador. The former won four out of the six tourneys they battled out, subduing Chile 3-1, Paraguay 2-0, Bolivia 5-0, and Peru 2-0. They had a draw with Argentina 0-0 and were defeated by Venezuela 0-1.

Ecuador won only twice in the past six qualifying matches, which they did over Chile 3-1 and Paraguay 4-1. The have drawn in three tourneys with Uruguay 1-1, Venezuela 1-1, and Argentina 1-1. Their only defeat came from a match with Peru 0-1.

Their last meeting

The two South American sides last met for a FIFA rivalry on 11 June 2012 at the Estadio Olimpico Atahualpa in Quito. Only one goal was scored in the match, which was delivered by Cristian Benitez in the 53th minute for the home team. More than 37,000 people watched the event which was officiated by Brazilian referee Wilson Seneme.

Potential winners

Because the “home advantage” spell roams strongly around CONMEBOL, it was expected that Ecuador will win over their visitors last year. And so they did. Now that the set-up has been reciprocated, Colombia will have their turn to make for a winning side. The team were never defeated in their last five home matches, whereas Ecuador seem fragile when playing as visitors. Of the five away matches they had, they won only once, drawn with opponents twice, and were overthrown twice as well. That said, Colombia will apparently dominate in this upcoming tourney.
