Matchday 15 (September 8) for the FIFA World Cup 2014 Qualifications (CONMEBOL) will see four pairs engage in a clash. One of them, Chile and Venezuela, will commence their second and last duel at the Estadio Nacional in Santiago to determine which of them will have the greater chance to advance in next year’s Brazil tournament. The last time these sides had a faceoff for the Qualifications was on June last year, when Venezuela played as home but lost points to their Chilean challengers 0-2.

Current tally assigns Chile in the top 4, while Venezuela is ranked sixth. The former’s CONMEBOL form is fairly impressive, with three of their latest matches showing victories. Earlier matches, however, were throbbing defeats which include one obtained from current frontrunners, Argentina 1-2. Venezuela’s record, by comparison, appears less spectacular. Their last match incurred a downfall from Uruguay 0-1 and the tourney preceding that ended only in a draw (with Bolivia 1-1). They did win over Colombia 1-0 earlier this year, though.

Past battles between these South American sides indicate Chile to be the superior party. Of their last seven matches (across different tournaments), Venezuela have only won once over their nemeses. Two of these tourneys were draws and the rest were dominated by Chile. Now that the last-mentioned side are set to play as home, there is a greater possibility that they will emerge as champions. In a region where the “home advantage” concept casts a spell in most occasions, it will not come as a surprise if Venezuela succumb to their rivals again.
