World Cup Qualifications (CAF Group D) Preview: Ghana vs. Zambia

On September 6, Ghana and Zambia will meet up for the second time for the FIFA World Cup 2014 qualifiers (CAF Group D). The last occasion they dueled (June 9, 2012) in the same competition saw home side Zambia win over Ghana 1-0. Christopher Katongo scored the only goal in the match, which he delivered in the first-half. In this upcoming fixture at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, Zambia are still aiming for a win even while now playing as away. Ghana, however, seem to be heading for a home victory and are eager to protect their top position in the Group D table.

Current standings place Ghana with a one-point lead over Zambia. The former has so far accumulated 12 points since the commencement of qualifiers, while the latter has 11. If Ghana win this round (or at least, post a draw), then they are sure to advance to the higher stages of the competition. But if Zambia make a consecutive victory, then the certainty of their opponents’ placement in the third round will be put to a blur.

Zambia’s stint at the WC Qualifications gave them a total of three wins, including their debut match with Sudan 3-0. They are yet to be defeated, as their other matches were draws. Ghana, meanwhile, posted a spectacular win during the tournament’s opening, having packed down Lesotho with a commanding final tally 0-7. Except for their away defeat from their current opponents, Zambia, the side’s streak has so far been stellar. Ghana’s subsequent matches in the qualifiers were sky-high triumphs.

At the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Ghana became only the third African team in history to reach the World Cup quarter-finals, after Cameroon and Senegal. Zambia, on the other hand, are yet to make their own feat in the world-famous tournament.
