World Cup Qualification Results: UEFA Group D

Of all the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualification matches they had this year, Netherlands never went home empty-handed. A draw with Estonia may have been scored, but the rest of their tourneys turned out tremendously successful. Their biggest win in the tournament was on their meeting with Hungary, where Persie, Strootman, Lens, Devecseri, Vaart, and Robben all netted eight (collective) goals to completely bury Dzsudzsak’s lone goal for his team. Persie, in particular, delivered a decisive hat-trick in that combat. Harvesting a total of 28 points from 10 fixtures and scoring 34 goal overall, the Dutch players topped the group table and automatically obtained seeding in next year’s finals in Brazil.

After finishing the qualification round’s Group Stage as runners up, Romania were given berth for the Second Round. Ranking seventh among all the ‘best second placers’ in the UEFA groups, the side would be competing with other teams branded with the same moniker for a chance of qualifying for the finals next year. Romania have a fairly sizable chance of securing a ticket to Brazil, but would need to bulk up more in the creativity department if they want to subdue such challengers as Iceland, France, and Sweden.

Hungary and Turkey

For Hungary and Turkey, the campaign to obtain entry to the World Cup in Brazil has already concluded. Despite earning more than a dozen points in the Group Stage, the sides failed to advance even just in the ‘Ranking of second-placed teams’ round. Outclassing Romania and Netherlands was just too difficult of a task.

Estonia and Andorra

Estonia’s hope for a seeding in the finals already faded even before all of the Group Stage matches trekked the finish line. The side failed to deliver any victory in their last four tourneys in the competition, putting a major blow to their World Cup journey. Andorra, on the other hand, were an utter disappointment from start to finish. The shy football swarm have never won in any of their 10 qualification fixtures.
