World Cup Qualification Play-offs (UEFA): France vs. Ukraine

World Cup Qualification Play-offs (UEFA): France vs. Ukraine

Match Date: 19 November 2013

Match Venue: Stade de France

The conjecture that France will not be able to qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup finals for the first time in 20 years is gradually becoming a fact. After facing Ukraine in a dismal 2-0 away defeat during the first leg of the play-off in the World Cup UEFA segment, the French squad will have a tremendous challenge of turning this one around when they meet again with the in-form Ukrainians for the tournament’s return leg. To not advance in the finals via the group stage was already a huge disappointment for France, but losing in the playoffs is just plain displeasure.

Les Bleus fell to their knees when none of their players was able to score a goal during the joist. They, instead, conceded a goal to Roman Zozulia shortly after the hour and another one to Andriy Yarmolenko in the match’s dying minutes.

France barely had an opportunity to convert chances; even Samir Nasri’s effort was put on hiatus after the strong Ukrainian side prevented him from doing what he had to do. To make matters worse, France will have to do without Arsenal’s Laurent Koscielny for the second leg, after he was sent off in the closing stages.

French coach Didier Deschamps picked a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Olivier Giroud up front and Karim Benzema on the bench. The visitors tried to keep possession of the ball but Ukraine were the more dangerous side.

World Cup betting tip: Ukraine might wallop France’s chance of advancing through the Brazil finals. The French players are generally fine and might even score goals this time around, but a draw will likely finish this match. Now will be the time for the Ukrainians to make their first appearance in the World Cup since 2006.
