World Cup Match Preview: Uruguay vs. England (Group D)

World Cup Match Preview: Uruguay vs. England (Group D)

Match Date: 19 June 2014 (local time)

Venue: Sao Paulo

Two-time World Cup champion, Uruguay was humbled in its clash against Costa Rica. Its stunning defeat is probably one of the most shocking losses in this year’s tournament, next to defending titleholder, Spain.

England also lost their opening match. Yet, with its youngsters (Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge) featuring what they got against Italy, a sparkle of hope shines in the English camp.

What happened?

La Celeste had to endure a humiliating loss to minnow Costa Rica While it look like Uruguay had control after Edinson Cavani nailed a penalty on the 24th, the match took a different direction during the second half.

Led by man of the match, Joel Campbell, the Los Ticos engaged into an unstoppable scoring rampage. On the 57th, three (3) minutes after Campbell scored the equalizer, Oscar Duarte took the lead for Costa Rica, whilst Marcos Ureña increased it further when he scored on the match’s dying minutes.

Costa Rica won the match against the humbled Uruguay with a convincing 3-1.

England readily featured during their encounter against Italy. However, the creative genius, Andrea Pirlo was simply too much for the Three Lions to handle. Nevertheless, their overall performance was very promising.

Italy took the lead as Claudio Marchisio scored the match’s first goal. Daniel Sturridge immediately responded. After three (3) minutes the young striker scored the equalizer. Unfortunately, just like what happened to Uruguay, the tempo shifted towards the Azzurri’s direction and on the 50th, super Mario Balotelli nailed England’s coffin.

England is readily favored by world cup odds.  Asian handicap with values ranging from 0-0.5 are given to Uruguay while England is pegged to win at 1.74.

England took more shots during their clash against Italy, whereas Uruguay’s scoring chances were readily slowed down by Costa Rica.

There is a possibility for Luis Suarez to start for La Celeste as the squad try to keep their survival hopes alive. However, the young and dynamic warriors of the Three Lions are also keen on repeating their spectacular performance against Italy. This therefore, makes them a dangerous squad on the pitch. England may also take advantage of Maxi Pereira’s absence. The defender received a red card after committing a foul in the last minute of the match.
