World Cup Match Preview: Costa Rica vs. Greece

World Cup Match Preview: Costa Rica vs. Greece

Match Date: 29 June 2014 (local time)

Venue: Recife

Costa Rica and Greece share a common denominator:  both are certified stunners in their respective group. Which of these teams will continue to surprise the world? And which of these teams will go home upset and empty-handed?

The clashing squads

Costa Rica

It was practically easy to dismiss Costa Rica as Group D’s minnow. Grouped with the renowned powerhouses of World Cup, Uruguay, Italy and England, the Los Ticos does not seem to have a place in the Round of 16.

Unfortunately for its dedicated naysayers and detractors, the North American squad started strong and literally left all of its opponents begging on their knees. Uruguay was the first to have a taste of Costa Rica’s wicked attacks. Although comprised of top-caliber players such as Edinson Cavani, Diego Forlan, Luis Suarez etc, the squad was forced to swallow a thrashing. Costa Rica fired three (3) goals and almost secured a clean sheet if not for Cavani’s penalty.

To others, the victory was plain luck, but when they stunned Italy with a narrow victory, the squad just have to wait for the group’s runner-up as they are already assured of a spot in the Round of 16. They could have been contented with a lackluster performance against England. Yet, they chose not to settle for a mediocre display and even scored a point out of the even steven finish against England.

Greece

Throughout the Group Stage, Greece showed that they can get better in every match that comes along their way.

They were unable to portray the attacking image that they had when they fought against Colombia. However, they just showed how good their defence was when they settled for a scoreless stalemate against Japan.
The deciding match came when they met the then heavy favorite of world cup betting tips, Ivory Coast. But the Greeks ensured that they have their last laugh. Georgios Samaras converted a penalty, thus, helping the squad qualify to the next round.

Prediction

In a match participated by squads capable of making the most heartbreaking upsets, one must look into the depth of each group. Evidently, it is Costa Rica, which possesses such characteristic.

Greece may opt to park the bus, but Costa Rica is determined to score and challenge that defence wall.
