World Cup Match Preview: Belgium vs. USA (Round of 16)

World Cup Match Preview: Belgium vs. USA (Round of 16)

Match Date: 01 July 2014 (local time)

Venue: Salvador

After failing to qualify in two (2) consecutive World Cup tournaments, the Belgian squad is on the verge of earning its redemption. After topping its group, Marc Wilmots and his men is just a match away from entering the quarter-finals, proving that they are indeed, the tournament’s dark horse.

Yet, the dark horse image is not exclusive to Belgium. USA, which pulled off an outstanding performance is also keen on advancing to the next stage. Their dominating presence during the face-off against Germany signals their strong desire to make a strong finish in this competition.

The clashing squads

The depth of Belgium’s team form is the group’s evident strength. Its players lived up to expectations and exhibited versatility on the pitch. Eden Hazard, for one, has been a consistent in identifying and creating scoring chances for the team, whilst Romelu Lukaku has remained persistent in converting. Likewise, Vincent Kompany’s leadership never fails to shine in the field.
Belgium’s strength and composure, however, will be put to a test. Kompany is doubtful during the encounter against USA. The skipper incurred an injury during the clash against Russia.

Unfortunately, Kompany is not alone in the injury list. Marouane Fellaini is also doubtful after suffering a “knock in the calf.” Likewise, Anthony Vanden Borre had to endure a broken fibula and Thomas Vermaelen is nursing a hamstring.

The last time that USA entered the quarter-finals was in 2002 and after twelve (12) years oof waiting, the squad has the chance to replicate their 2002 performance and perhaps, advance into the last leg of the competition.

Despite the criticisms of Jurgen Klinsmann’s decision to disregard Landon Donovan in USA’s final player list, the void was immediately filled by the rise of Clint Dempsey, Jermaine Jones and Michael Bradley. The trio has been terrorizing their opponents on the pitch. Bradley and Jones, for one, gave the Germans a good scare during the Round of 16 qualifiers.

Despite their injury issues, Belgium remains to be the favorite of world cup betting tips. However, they should further improve their defence as USA is eager to give them a shock,
