World Cup Match Preview: Belgium vs. Russia (Group H)

Match Date: 22 June 2014 (local time)

Venue: Rio De Janeiro

World cup bettingfavorite, Belgium will try to extend its lead in Group H after an inspiring come from behind win against the resilient Algeria. Marc Wilmots and his men are eager to face Russia, which, like them, pulled off a late rally that forced South Korea to settle for a stalemate.

What happened?

Belgium displayed a strong a force early into the match against Algeria. The squad took total control of possession during the first half. But the squad had a hard time converting their scoring opportunities.

Although Algeria had trouble penetrating Belgium’s defence wall, a determined Sofiane Feghouli made his way into the box and picked up a foul against Jan Vertonghen. Feghouli’s penalty gave Algeria the lead.

Belgium trailed the Dessert Foxes until the second. However, it was the presence of Dries Mertens and Marouane Fellaini, which turned the odds into their favor.

Fellaini’s header scored the match’s equalizer. But it was Merten’s right footed shot, which sealed Algeria’s fate in the match.

The first half proved to be unproductive for both Russia and South Korea. But it all changed during the next half.

A careless mistake from Russia’s goalkeeper, Igor Akinfeev witnessed Lee Keun-Ho scored on the 68th.

Yet, Russia was quick to react. Eight (8) minutes after South Korea took the lead, a rampaging Alexksandr Kerzhakov nailed the equalizer to keep Russia’s survival chances alive.

Tipped as the competition’s dark horse, Belgium is the match’s top pick. The defence they have shown was simply impressive. But they need to convert more as Russia is less likely to wave the white flag easily.
