WC Qualifications Preview: Chile has the upper hand over Venezuela

Chile

Matchday 15 (September 6) for the FIFA World Cup Qualifications (CONMEBOL) will see four pairs of football teams compete for the honor. One of them would be Chile and Venezuela, whose “home advantage spell” would rout against La Vinotinto as the match will be held at the Estadio Nacional in Santiago, Chile. That said, World Cup betting would inevitably lean toward La Roja.

But put that “home advantage spell” aside, Chile definitely has the greater chance to dominate the match. Currently ranked 4th in the CONMEBOL table, the Jorge Sampaoli-supervised side may already secure clearance for the Brazil finals. Whereas Venezuela is logged at number six, which means that it may not even be able to compete in the playoffs unless it overtakes current fifth placer, Uruguay.

Chile’s win over Paraguay 2-1 on matchday 13 is proof that even if playing as away, the side could still nail their match. Earlier away tourneys may have produced defeats for them, but at least La Roja proved that they are capable to defying conventions. This also substantiates the fact that the team managed to overthrow Venezuela in La Vinotinto’s very own home last year. Now that their upcoming match is even more rooting toward them, Chile can iron victory in the slightest effort.

On June 12, also for matchday 13, César Farías’ side failed to win in their own home against Uruguay 0-1. While their tourney against Colombia 1-0 on March 27 was a success, it did not provide assurance that playing as home will unlock an untapped opportunity to emerge as winners. Culturally and historically speaking, baseball has always been the most popular sport in Venezuela. This probably explains why the country averts athletic talent away from football, thus contributing to their lack of accomplishment in any CONMEBOL competition.

It is pretty apparent that Chile will end up victorious in the match against Venezuela. But odds are just odds, and surprises always happen. Nonetheless, the possibility of that happening will remain at the minimum.
