WC Qualifications (CAF Group I) Preview: Togo vs. Congo DR

WC Qualifications (CAF Group I) Preview: Togo vs. Congo DR

Congo DR

The CAF Group I for the FIFA World Cup 2014 qualifying rounds may be dominated by Cameroon and Libya, but this does not mean that current bottom half occupants, Congo DR and Togo, have the slim potential to get past the leaders. But for now, their business is on defeating one another as they are set for a second encounter on September 8. Their last match saw Congo playing for home, but with respect to the qualification rules, the set-up has to be reversed for the sides’ second meeting. Hence, the match will take place at Togo’s home ground, the Stade de Kegue in Lomé.

Congo DR’s patience to score a win wears dangerously thin. After a seemingly unbroken streak of draws from their previous matches, The Leopards have already reached their maximum thirst for a victory. The last time they accumulated winning goals for a qualifying tourney was already more than a year ago, when they competed against current opponents Togo 2-0 at home. The subsequent tourneys were draws and while this is not necessarily a bad thing, it does require them to do a system reboot in order for them to rank higher in the table.

Congo DR may already be bored of scoring draws in their latest matches, but give those results to Togo and The Sparrow Hawks would be happy enough. The side have been performing rather below par in the qualifications, having suffered four consecutive defeats from all of their cluster-mates in Group I. The only silver lining they had for the tournament was a draw with Libya in the opening of the CAF Second Round last year. Beyond that, the side have been in a desert-like drought.

In terms of consistency and recent statistics, Congo DR have the obvious upper hand over Togo. While the latter are currently placed higher in the FIFA rankings (20th) than the former (21st), there is substantial possibility that Togo could not escape another downfall. Congo will dominate this game for sure, with goal scores probably finishing in a 3-1 tally.
