WC Qualifications (CAF Group H) Preview: Algeria vs. Mali

Force Algeria to wrestle in a high-pressure match and they will deliver a reasonable display. Send them in an opportunity-rich tourney and they will transcend frontiers.

Current table leaders, Algeria, are seeing a plausible admission to the FIFA World Cup 2014 in Brazil. Accumulating 12 points in total thus far and a goal difference of +8, the side are in robust shape to claim another victory when they meet fellow frontrunners, Mali, on September 10 for the CAF’s World Cup Qualifications.

Their last match proved to be a thriller, with both Mali and Algeria displaying magnificent goals and strong defenses. The tourney eventually landed on the hands of Mali 2-1, but they did not seize victory without braving the well calibrated form of their opponents. Algeria opened the scoring via Islam Slimani in the sixth minute, but this was later evened out by Mahamadou N’Diaye’s equalizer. Just a few minutes before the match’s conclusion, Modibo Maiga struck a late goal and accentuated his side’s sure lead.

Algeria have advanced for three World Cups: in 1982, 1986 and 2010. They have also lorded over the African Cup of Nations once in 1990, when they hosted the tournament. In contrast, Mali have never appeared in any World Cup, but were nevertheless able to earn high spots in the past two African Cup of Nations. As per FIFA ranking for the African cluster, Algeria are placed at number four while Mali are ranked one spot higher.

Prediction: A narrow win by Algeria will seal this match.
