WC Qualification (EUFA) Prediction: Norway vs. Cyprus

WC Qualification (EUFA) Prediction: Norway vs. Cyprus

Norway and Cyprus will be competing for the World Cup Qualifications for EUFA group E on September 7, with the Ullevaal Stadion serving as venue. Norway will now be playing as home, after serving as the away side when they competed against Cyprus the last time at the Antonis Papadopoulos Stadium in Larnaca.

Their Larnaca duel on October last year—for a possible place in the FIFA World Cup 2014—saw Norway bringing home the bacon 1-3. Cyprus were the first side to earn a goal via Efstathios Aloneftis at 42 minutes, but the away side climbed up the ladder like a whirlwind. Brede Hangeland scored the side’s first goal at 45 minutes while Tarik Elyounoussi followed this up with a penalty goal at 81 minutes. Joshua King sealed the match at 83 minutes under Pawel Gil’s officiating decision. Currently, Norway is ranked 4th in the Group E table, while Cyprus is stuck in the last position at number six.

Their recent individual matches

The Drillos’ (Norway) friendly match against Macedonia FYR was an inspiring success, having won the tourney with a 2-0 final score. As for their latest WC qualification matches, Egil Olsen’s men lost their tourney to Albania 0-1 despite a home advantage. But a draw 1-1 was eventually decided when they had a rematch for the trophy, with the Drillos now playing as away.

Cyprus have not been exuding the vigor they are supposed to display. The Nikos Nioplias-led side have been suffering a painful strip of defeats lately. All but one of the team’s four recent matches were upsets, with just one draw (with Switzerland 0-0) making a neutral gradient in their record (which was later translated into defeat when their battle with the Swiss players took off for the second time). Their tourneys with Finland and Serbia for the friendlies delivered final scores of 1-3 and 0-3, in favor of the challengers.

Norway apparently have the cleaner statistics to brag about. Cyprus seem to be lacking in inspiration to raise their bar a little higher. Hence, it is just appropriate and reasonable to give the World Cup betting odds to the Scandinavian team.
