USA Has Slim Survival Chances In The 2014 World Cup

USA is probably one of the most pressured squads in the upcoming 2014 World Cup. More often than not, their survival chances have been the subject of media debates and spectacle. The pressure became even more increased as the squad’s head honcho, Jurgen Klinsmann decided to drop the country’s leading poacher, Landon Donovan in the final list.

It has been more than a decade since the United States has managed to advance into the latter stages of the World Cup tournament. During the last two (2) World Cup competitions, the squad was stuck in the Group Stage and Round of 16. This year, the team aspires for a stronger finish or at least a repeat of their impressive performance in 2002 where they made it to the quarter-finals.

Unfortunately, their first match is pitted against one of their bitter rivals—Ghana. Ghana is ranked as the 38th best in the world. It may not be that impressive when compared to other participating countries, but they are one heck of an opponent that USA cannot take for granted.

In 2006 and 2010, it was the Black Stars, which eliminated them in the competition. For two (2) consecutive clashes, they were the ones, which waved the white flag. They threw the white towel and would need to wait for several years before they can avenge themselves.

Nevertheless, it seems like revenge is less likely to happen now. Jordan Ayew’s hattrick against South Korea and the daunting chant of the crowd asking for their head readily manifest Ghana’s determination to advance at their expense. And if the stars have readily abandoned their side, USA’s first match is pitted against Ghana.

Given this aspect at hand, the demand to win their first match increased. Statistics have it that 87% of squads, which secured victory in their first matches advanced in the Round of 16. And should USA fails to do the same, there is a possibility that it will spend more time outside the pitch than engaging into exciting world cup matches.

In the meantime, should they advance into the Round of 16, what is the possibility that they will beat Portugal or thrashed Germany? Apparently, the said scenario is possible, but when one speaks of doing it today, it is more of a far-flung shot.
