When Underdogs Become Stars: How James Kewsi Appiah Made History In Ghana

The seemingly illogical lack of trust in Appiah’s leadership is a common phenomenon. New faces are immediately placed under the scrutiny of incriminating eyes of critics, who, theoretically think they are football’s gift to mankind. Appiah is no exception. But perhaps, what makes his case a little bit peculiar is the belief that he remains inexperience despite walking side by side with 3 of Ghana’s previous coaches.
Certainly, his credentials, no matter how noteworthy they were, barely made an impact to the powers that be. It was disappointing as hell.

Yet, looking back, it was the very same disappointment, which helped Appiah propelled his managerial career to greater heights—and of course, Ghana into the limelight when they sealed their World Cup berth. Appiah has learned to embrace the beauty of being the “underdog,” the pressure of being “underestimated” and ultimately, the glory of resilient warrior.

Appiah, who was previously perceived as a young and for the lack of a better term, incompetent manager, has become the world’s first black African coach to lead a squad in competitive World Cup matches. He has now, carved his name within the pages of football history.

With a World Cup qualification under his name,  Appiah  has nothing to prove, except for a strong finish in the tournament. But the natural-born achiever was not satisfied with his current strings of accomplishments.

In order to boost his tactical strategies, Appiah exert extra efforts in participating in knowledge-sharing programs. Just recently, he paid Manchester City’s Manuel Pellegrini a visit. Likewise, he observed Liverpool’s match preparations.

Appiah does not need to do all of these. He can study the match at the comforts of his own house. He can take the easy route rather than spend his time in traveling. But Appiah knows he needs to know more. There is the hunger for knowledge that seeks to be fulfilled and hopefully, be executed on the pitch.  The underdog has taken its stand and surely, there is no easy way to stop this fully determined man.
