Team Switzerland: The Road to the FIFA World Cup 2014

An excellent attack, and more so in the defense, paved way to Switzerland’s easy seeding into the Brazil finals as finished their FIFA World Cup 2014 qualifiers without conceding all points to Iceland, Slovenia, Cyprus, Albania, and Norway in 10 fixtures. The Alpine country, with a sizable community of immigrants from the Balkans, has plenty of reasons for believing they can at least reach the quarter finals.

Most of the team’s players, such as Stephan Lichtsteiner, Gokhan Inler, Blerim Dzemaili, and Valon Behrami, are playing for the most successful Bundesliga and Serie A clubs and are experienced warriors at the highest levels. German Ottmar Hitzfeld, one of the world’s most eminent managers, leads the team. The top brass has achieved unprecedented success at club levels with seven Bundesliga and two Champions League titles to his name.

Schweizer Nati’s re-emergence in the global football scene is largely attributed to their resilient defense, with two central midfielders guarding the back four. But the rigid effort in this pitch skill has nevertheless attracted criticism, mainly addressed to ward the coach. But  Hitzfeld has responded to this censure by stating that his rigid 4-4-2 formation of integrating creative young players into a 4-2-3-1 line-up is very ideal to a counter-attacking approach. A record of nine clean sheets in Switzerland’s last 14 matches is proof to the strength of this defense.

The Swiss side are primarily composed of young, skillful, and resolute players. In spite of the their reputation for being quiet and reserved, they will not play meek to distance themselves from a confrontation as they showed in a energetic friendly win over Brazil last year.
