Team Captain Profile: Uruguay’s Diego Lugano

Compared to Luis Suarez, Diego Lugano has achieved less recognition than his compatriot. However, this does not reduce him to being a weak team captain as he also boasts of excellent faculties that other players, including Suarez, may barely have possession of.

A center-half, Lugano has shown more impressive stunts in the international arena than in local competitions. This is perhaps one of the main reasons why Óscar Tabárez vested the captaincy on him to tap into his capacities on a large war zone. He was a major asset in Uruguay’s South Africa campaign four years ago, leading the brood to their semi-final finish in that tournament. He was also voted as the best skipper of the event as well as having more than 90 caps under his belt. With these, he is a good pick to lead his team in the FIFA World Cup 2014.

Lugano was a teen victor of the Uruguayan championship with Nacional before establishing himself as one of South America’s most promising young defenders with São Paulo. He spent four years with the Brazilian club, reaching the summit in 2005 when he co-contributed to the side’s treble of Campeanato Paulista, Copa Libertadores, and FIFA Club World Cup in Tokyo. In the latter, he and his teammates knocked out English powerhouse Liverpool 1-0 in the final.

Lugano was also an import to France where he joined Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2011. The move was largely fueled by the spectacle he exuded in the Copa América with Uruguay. However, he only appeared in 12 fixtures with PSG as the side finished as runners up in the league before being loaned to Málaga in January 2013. Eight months later, he was signed to West Bromwich for a two-year stint. His goal against Everton on 20 January 2014 proved crucial to the squad’s form as it served as an equalizer to the opposition’s opener.
