Team Captain Profile: United States’ Clint Dempsey

On-loan Fulham player Clint Dempsey is often lined up as a striker courtesy of his powerful maneuvers that place major threat to the opposition and for his excellent aerial ability. He received the highest individual honor in football in the US when he was recognized as “Honda Player of the Year” for 2006, outclassing the likes of Kasey Keller and Brian McBride in a poll of sportswriters. The award came after he obtained 237 points from 207 sports journalists.

A versatile player with skyrocketing technical skills and creativity, Dempsey rose to prominence initially with the Revolution. He was part of a very massive season in which he played in the majority of the fixtures, delivered seven magnificent goals, and received the MLS Rookie of the Year award for 2004.

Internationally, Dempsey debuted in the global scene at the 2003 FIFA World Youth Championship in the Middle-East. His first senior year on the same audience reach took place on November 2004 when the USA fought against Jamaica. In 2006, he scored the only goal of his team’s entire campaign for the FIFA World Cup in Germany (two goals were credited to the team but one of which was an own goal from their opponents).

Dempsey held the record of the fastest goal in US World Cup qualifying match; the US’ 8–0 triumph over Barbados was opened by Dempsey only 53 seconds from time. He later outperformed that feat in 2012 when he scored just 36 seconds into a 2–1 qualifying loss at Jamaica. In the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Dempsey delivered a goal against England, becoming the second American—after Brian McBride—to score goals in multiple World Cup tournaments.

Dempsey’s dribbling skills and vision are over the top, but he needs to improve his visibility in the fixtures as he is often overshadowed by his teammates. He displays spectacles that are otherwise not as par with his actual abilities.
