Team Captain Profile: Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo

Team Captain Profile: Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo

There is no question of Cristiano Ronaldo’s acumen in football; many people even name him as the best in the world. However, he is tasked with a major responsibility in the FIFA World Cup 2014 as he is seen to be the “only” player in his team to truly illustrate the knack for quality football. This makes Portugal the dark horse, not the favorites, in the tournament especially when considering that other teams have several “great” players (example: Argentina’s Los Cuatro Fantasticos) in their ensembles.

A recipient of three Community Shields, champion in two League Cups, three-time winner of the Premier League, a victor of La Liga, and a major figure in two Club World Cup victories, Cristiano Ronaldo ranks among the world’s most successful pitch kings. He is an elite member of an unofficial circle of the greatest footballers of all time and is his generation’s most valuable talent (along will Leo Messi).

With Brazil as the host nation, Ronaldo is hoping that his “brothers” will root for Portugal in addition to their own country. The entities share the same language and Brazil is the only Portuguese-speaking country in the Americas.

Portugal were drawn into Group G—the dreaded “Group of Death”—where they will face Germany, the United States, and Ghana.

“We are not favorites, but we shall try to enjoy it,” said the Madeira native. “We know we have a complicated group.”

If Portugal make it to the knockout rounds, the earliest they can face Brazil is in the semifinals. That gives Brazilians at least five fixtures to cheer on Ronaldo and his teammates—if they choose to do so.
