Team Captain Profile: Nigeria’s Vincent Enyeama

Vincent Enyeama played prominently in the Japan-Korea World Cup in 2002 when he dove full-length to deliver a brilliant save against England. The astounding performance rapidly opened new opportunities for the goalkeeper and received tremendous attention that was eventually translated into a career full of energy, plaudits, and appreciation.

Enyeama has been playing for the Nigerian team since 2002 and will be making his third cap in the prestigious tournament’s Brazil edition on July, where he is the Super Eagles’ captain. The FIFA World Cup 2014 would mark one of the Kaduna native’s career highlights following a successful stint in the French club Lille.

One of his generation’s greatest goalkeepers, Enyeama is reputed for his excellent saves. In the current Ligue 1 season alone, he is responsible for Lille’s more than a dozen clean sheets, not to mention several draws where he rendered his side’s opponents goalless.

Internationally, Enyeama is regarded as someone belonging to the elite class of shot-stoppers. In the FIFA World Cup 2010, he prevented Argentina from earning a massive victory over the Eagles. He put the South American side’s scoring spree at bay by making six fine saves—including four from Argentine superstar Leo Messi. The match almost ended in a draw, and although his side lost, Enyeama was still named “Man of the Match” and “World Player of the Week” by Goal.com.

Enyeama was called up to Nigeria’s 23-man squad for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations and was selected for Nigeria’s squad at the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup. He was also responsible for Nigeria’s four clean sheets from five victories in the CAF segment of the FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
