Team Captain Profile: Netherlands’ Robin Van Persie

Robin Van Persie morphed successfully from being a humble Eredivisie player to being one of the Premier League’s best-rated strikers. The Rotterdamer has been spending his top-flight stay with Manchester United since 2012, but his skills have been largely developed by the powerful tutelage of Arsene Wenger when he was still part of Arsenal. At the Euro 2008, he was named The Gunners’ Player of the Season after scoring 20 goals in 44 appearances. His form in the 2011-12 season as the club’s captain was also among the best in the world as he volleyed 30 league goals to win the Premier League Golden Boot and the PFA Player of the Year award.

Captaining the Netherlands squad is therefore not a surprise for RVP. In fact, he was a vital presence for the national team in the South Africa World Cup when he and his teammates rallied their way towards the second highest position in the FIFA finals. They were only beaten by Spain on a small margin after they gave them a very good fight by conceding just one goal.

RVP may not be among the football world’s most lightning-spirited players, but he is certainly a part of the elite circle. With the right amount of timing, he is able to pull off impossible maneuvers and inject excellent control of the ball. His refined sense of discipline also allows him to unlock any defense. The problems arising from RVP’s pitch skills, however, are his susceptibility to injuries and relative weakness in aerial duels. His temper also leaves spectators some valid questions.

The 30-year old striker concluded the FIFA World Cup 2014 qualification campaign for the Europe segment as the top scorer with 11 goals. He became the Netherlands’ top goalscorer of all-time in an 8–1 defeat of Hungary for Group D, where he fired a hat-trick.
