Team Captain Profile: Honduras’ Noel Valladares

Although reported to be shy and naïve outside the pitch, Noel Valladares is a monstrous force inside any stadium. The highly reputed Honduran goalkeeper has been playing football for nearly two decades and his abilities have remained sharp, forceful, and lustrous throughout the years. He currently plays for Olimpia, his country’s most successful club of all time.

Valladares are among Los Catrachos’ most capped footballers with a total of 105 caps as of February 2013. He has represented his country in 46 FIFA World Cup qualification matches and played in all three matches at the 2010 FIFA World Cup. He also played at the 2009 and 2011 UNCAF Nations Cups as well as at the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Valladares is a highly valued goalkeeper of his country and has been a top pick for over a decade. He is the third Hoduran to accomplish more than a hundred caps, only behind Amado Guevara and Carlos Pavon.

At the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Valladares figured prominently as one of his national team’s driving forces to bring them into the finals. And there, he played in all three games, conceding 3 goals against Chile (0-1) and Spain (0-2) before delivering a clean sheet and earning the ‘Man of the Match’ award in the team’s final game against Switzerland.

At the CONCACAF segment of the qualifications for the FIFA World Cup 2014, the Comayagua native scored four clean sheets and was one of the main reason for the massive victories they had against Canada, Cuba, and Jamaica.

In the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup, he was the recipient of the “Best Goalkeeper” after scoring the tournament’s third and fourth best saves.
