Team Captain Profile: Ghana’s Asamoah Gyan

Asamoah Gyan was not household name some years ago in his native Ghana. However, since his stint with Sunderland in the English Premier League, he rapidly rose to prominence and earned the highest respect of every Ghanian football enthusiast. He was formerly on loan with Italian club Udinese and French side Rennes prior to transferring to Sunderland, but it was in the latter that he really displayed some of his best stunts that are outstanding in their own rights.

Gyan was a teen star who debuted in the international scene when he was only 17. In the 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, he scored a goal for his country against Somalia. It was a crucial score as it drove the Black Stars into victory against their Horn of Africa opponents. In the finals of that same World Cup edition, Gyan scored the fastest goal which he netted in just over a minute. The strike was also Ghana’s first ever goal in that competition, which they obtained against Czech Republic at the RheinEnergieStadion in Cologne, Germany. The match ended 2-0 in favor of the African side.

In the 2010 World Cup battle between Ghana and Serbia, Gyan fired a massive 85th minute goal that was eventually converted into a 1-0 clean sheet win. In the side’s second fixture, the Accra native netted again a goal four minutes before the half-hour mark to level the scores and earn his squad a 1-1 stalemate against Australia.

The Ghanian captain may have shown superb stregnths in various skill areas, but he is often criticized for the lack of focus when chances on very crucial penalty kicks come his way.
