Team Captain Profile: France’s Hugo Lloris

Considered as one of the best goalkeepers in the world, Hugo Lloris is at his most dangerous during one-on-one situations. His reflexes, whose speed is next to none, are particularly revered throughout Europe. These make him an ideal captain for the French squad, who are also gaining widespread endorsements for being one of the FIFA World Cup 2014 frontrunners.

Highly skilled, perseverant, athletic, and dynamic, Lloris is an all-round keeper. He started his career at OGC Nice in 2005 and began to prominently figure in the club during their campaign to the 2006 Coupe de la Ligue Final. After three seasons of excellent displays, the three-time Ligue 1 Goalkeeper of the Year awardee signed with Olympique Lyonnais, turning down other high-profile offers such as that of Milan. During his maiden season with Lyon, Lloris bagged a series of domestic accolades and in his second term, he earned nominations in the UEFA Champions League.

In spite of shouldering immense pressure as the successor of the prolific Lyon keeper Gregory Coupet, Lloris did not disappoint his new side. In fact, he was named the season’s best goal keeper even if Lyon lost the overall victory to eventual champions, Bordeaux. Seeking to find a different footballing atmosphere and embark on a new challenge, he joined English club Tottenham Hotspur on the final day of the summer 2012 window.

In 2008, he won his first French cap in a friendly against Uruguay. He also appeared in all of the 10 matches during the national team’s Brazil World Cup Qualifications where he was partly responsible of the team’s three clean sheets and one goalless draw.
