Team Captain Profile: Algeria’s Madjid Bougherra

Madjid Bougherra is no doubt one of Algeria’s best assets. A staple player for the national team, he played crucial role in the team’s qualification for the FIFA World Cup 2014—only the second time that the North African nation joined the world’s most prestigious football tournament.

The central defender aims to put Algeria in the map of World Cup by getting past the group stage. However, that task might prove tremendously difficult as they are seeded alongside equally stunning sides Russia, Korea, and Belgium. They will have their Brazil debut against the Belgians on June 17.

Bougherra started his club career with AS Quetigny before he signed for AS Longvic, Gueugnon, Crewe Alexandra, Sheffield Wednesday, and Charlton Athletic. In 2008, he transferred to Scottish club Rangers under a four-year deal. It was in this club that he gained some of his career’s best pieces. He made his Rangers debut on August 2008 in a match against Falkirk, and scored his first goal on 28 September 2008 in a 3–0 win against Hibernian.

On September 2010, following a stellar defensive approach against Manchester United in the Champions League that eventually ended in a goalless draw, Bougherra was named as the man of the match. Even after parting ways with Rangers in 2011 for Qatar side Lekhwiya, Bougherra still wish to play for the club—even for free.

Bougherra is Algeria’s key man in defense, having been assuming this role for almost a decade now. He netted all the crucial goals in the second leg against Burkina Faso. One of his best performances for the Fennec Foxes was against England at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, where he kept striker Wayne Rooney at bay and forced a 0-0 draw.
