Taeguk Warriors’ Blue Dragon, Lee Chung-yong

Taeguk Warriors’ Blue Dragon, Lee Chung-yong

Recognized as Tageuk Warrior’s “Blue Dragon,” it is not surprising to see Lee Chung-yong as one of the national squad’s key members. Aside from the fact that he is the squad’s skipper, South Korea simply cannot afford to miss his crucial passes and spectacular dribbling skills. These are crucial ingredients to any of the squad’s creative strategies on the pitch and needless to say, this role belongs to Lee Chung-yong.

Lee Chung-yong first etched his name in footballing history when an eager Cho Kwang-Rae envisioned a strong youth academy.  Scouting for potential talents, Lee immediately caught his attention. The enormous talent and potential shown by the teenager convinced the manager to secure his signature at once. Lee then left middle school and joined FC Seoul where he soon became a regular starting XI of the squad.

Lee got his big break when he joined the Premier League outfit, Bolton Wanderers and in no time, he was named by the British daily, The Times as one of the 50 Rising Stars. It was also in Bolton Wanderers where he won several important awards. These include Bolton Player of the Year, Player’s Player of the Year and Best Newcomer Award.

But Bolton Wanderers lost its Premier League status. Lee’s stellar career began to experience some downsides as his Championship appearance does not seem to compensate for his stellar performance. Likewise, the injury that sidelined him for quite some time threatened to take him out of the limelight.

Lee, however, is fully aware that he was born to play football. He made another surprising move when he returned earlier than what was expected. His fast recovery was a clear proof of the player’s love for the beautiful game.

Yet, despite his return, the player has to go through certain adjustments. The tedious matches in England, plus the high-pressured encounters in the FIFA 2014 World Cup qualifiers, have somehow halted Lee from reaching the apex of his performance.

Nevertheless, the natural-born footballer is not a fan of throwing white towels on the pitch. He continues to be on top of his form despite the difficulties and apparently, such characteristic—such core value and attitude that are readily ingrained within him explain why one of the most challenging responsibilities in squads was given to him. He is meant to be their leader—to walk the talk and set examples that could motivate and propel the squad to further greatness.
