Spain’s Final Line Up Sparks Controversy

Spain’s Final Line Up Sparks Controversy

Spain’s final world cup squad hits the headlines as Vicente Del Bosque drops Alvaro Negredo and Jesus Navas in the final cut.

The controversy surrounding the Spanish contingent stems from the fact that whilst Negredo and Navas were singled out, Fernando Torres and Diego Costa were able to seal their World Cup spot.

Del Bosque expressed that crossing out Navas was a heartbreaking decision. The squad’s head honcho added that Navas’ unfit condition helped him to choose a player who is in his 100%–a player who has no injury issues to worry.

However, Del Bosque’s inclusion of Costa seems to contradict his previous statement. It can be remembered that Atletico Madrid’s prized striker, who is also a target of the Premier League giant, Chelsea had to endure a hamstring injury prior to the Champions League match against city rival, Real Madrid.

Costa made it to the above-mentioned match, only to be substituted immediately.

Navas, naturally, expressed his disappointment over his exclusion. He was a part of the Spanish contingent, which won the 2010 World Cup.

On the other hand, comparisons between Fernando Torres and Negredo have been also made—that while Negredo’s performance declined during the second half of the season, Torres has also not featured in Chelsea. As a matter of fact, his manager, Jose Mourinho also questioned his ability to deliver results.

Nevertheless, despite the criticisms, Spain remains a favorite of world cup betting odds. Grouped against Netherlands, Chile and Australia, it is valued to win at 1.52.
