Sergei Ignashevich: The Core Of Russia’s Strength

Sergei Ignashevich: The Core Of Russia’s Strength

In 2009, the then head honcho of Everton, David Moyes was keen on signing Sergei Ignashevich as the best replacement for Joleon Lescott. His choice is not so surprising. As a matter of fact, Ignashevich is more than a replacement. He is a certified gem.

Ignashevich is the current skipper of the Russian national football squad. Described as one of Russia’s most prolific defenders, this recognized footballer can readily go head to head against the likes of Brazil’s Thiago Silva. His skills on the pitch readily exemplify his top-notch talent that could easily intimidate those who dare to oppose. The awards and recognitions collected by the domestic squads that he played for, speak of the impressive resume that he possesses.

Back in 2004, he was one of the prominent figures in the 2004 Euro. Aside from his typical defending duties, he also scored 3 crucial goals. Unfortunately, his shot to fame was ephemeral as a crucial knee injury took him out of the tournament. Yet, after four (4) years, his appearance in the 2008 Euro catapulted his name to tremendous success. It was also the time when Moyes noticed his exceptional skills.

He was also part of the CSKA Moscow squad that won the double during the 2012/13 season.

But it was never a bed of roses for Ignashevich. Also in 2009, the national squad’s skipper was handed over with a one-match ban after failing a doping test.

CSKA Moscow was quick to defend that the result was due to a technical error caused by the medical staff. The management stressed that a staff failed to disclose that Ignashevich and Alexei Berezutski took a cold medicine while performing their international duties.

Russia is one of the most awaited squads in the upcoming FIFA 2014 World Cup and relatively, its skipper, Sergei Ignashevich will be one of the competition’s main attractions.
