Safet Sušić: Insightful Decisions are Key to Bosnia-Herzegovina’s Strong Debut

There is less pressure to win the World Cup for Safet Sušić than most other coaches as his men are appearing in the competition only for the first time in Bosnia-Herzegovina’s history. However, their performance would still count as crucial as it will determine how strong or weak are they going to be when it comes to global competitions as high-profile as the FIFA tournament.

Prior to coaching the national team, Sušić served as manager for Cannes, Istanbulspor, Conyaspor, Caykur Rizespor, and Ankaraspor. The Zavidovići native’s debut as Bosnia-Herzegovina’s top brass gave him a 2-1 victory over Ghana on a friendly. His expert strategies and comprehensive approach to making decisions were pivotal to Zmajevi’s historic berth in the FIFA World Cup 2014. Between August 2012 and August 2013, Sušić’s ensemble scored an impressive nine-match unbeaten run. It was also under his tutelage that the Bosnia-Herzegovina side achieved their highest FIFA ranking ever, placing 13th overall.

While most online betting aficionados have their eyes on the more popular sides like Group rivals Argentina, defending champions Spain, and host nation Brazil,  Sušić believes that his team will do just as good as the aforementioned sides. The 59-year old former hat-trick scorer hopes to help his men make an impact on the tournament and doing it in their maiden year would be the best time to do so.

“We will use all the warm-up games to mold our best eleven and also to give fringe players a chance to prove their worth and make the squad more competitive,” said the former Yugoslavia forward.

Winning the entire thing would still be a long shot for Bosnia-Herzegovina. However, if Sušić is able to improve his already-effective formula, the side would have a very good chance at advancing beyond the Group stage.
