One of the most talked about clusters, Group G was source of some of the 2014 FIFA World Cup’s best pitch maneuvers and most shocking results. As expected, Germany topped the group table. The United States, however, were not exactly seen to emerge as the second best. The final tally has put both Portugal and Ghana in utter disbelief, teams who will be exiting the tournament very early.

Germany’s 4-0 rout of Portugal could be the Group’s most spellbinding battle. The UEFA powerhouses were touted to end their game in a draw or if either wins, only a little goal difference would determine the verdict. But that expectation did not translate the way it should have. Muller scored a hat-trick while Hummels netted his very first World Cup goal. Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo performed less spectacular than most people had expected him to, due largely to his injured left knee. None of his teammates were also able to prevent their German rivals from earning a clean sheet.

The United States, meanwhile, performed rather impressively considering that they were initially underestimated. The side won against Ghana, drew (and almost triumphed) against Portugal, and conceded just one goal to Germany. Dempsey scored twice while Brooks and Jones bagged one goal apiece.

Portugal were initially moored in the table’s bottom after only securing one point from their first two Group-stage matches while Ghana were ranked third. Upon their meeting’s conclusion just recently, they switched places when Ronaldo fired the winning goal against their African foes. However, the Iberian side needed more than four goals—an extremely tough job to carry out—to secure themselves with a berth in the Round of 16. The US and Portugal ended up obtaining equal number of points but the former won by goal difference.

Germany, one of the top favorites to win the tournament, will be battling out against Algeria in the Knockout stage. The US, meanwhile, are set to brawl against Belgium on the same World Cup round.
