The Group C of the 2014 FIFA World Cup provided four teams that represented their respective continents: Colombia for the Americas, Greece for Europe, Ivory Coast for Africa, and Japan for Asia. In the end, however, only half of these squads were able to book their tickets to the next round. From the pot, the Colombians and the Greeks were rendered the most successful.

Colombia came out of the brood as the only side to earn all nine points, winning their every match in the tournament. The squad earned a clean sheet in the curtain raiser against Greece 3-0, obtained a 2-1 finish against Ivory Coast in their second battle, and picked up a 1-4 success over Japan in their final match. Trailing Los Cafeteros are the Greeks, who scored one win (against Ivory Coast), one draw (with Japan), and one defeat (from the table leaders) from their Group stage fixtures. Ivory Coast won over Japan in their first match but have subsequently lost the crucial points in their last two tourneys. Japan, meanwhile, would be heading back to their home with just one point under their belt.

Of the individual players, Rodriguez produced the best strikes. Netting three goals, he was the Group’s best scorer and one of the six Colombians to find the net for their country (the others being Armero, Gutierrez, Quintero, Cuadrado, and Martinez). Gervinho and Bony each struck two goals for Ivory Coast but even these mighty warriors failed to put Les Elephants in the table’s top half. Ethniki’s Samaras also delivered two goals in the form of a brace, which was Greece badly needed to win their final fixture following goalless encounters in their first two meetings. Japan’s Okazaki and Honda successfully converted chances but the Samurai Blue needed so much more to reach at least the table’s second highest spot.

As the Group winners, Colombia have to face Group D runners up Uruguay in the Round of 16 while Greece would be fighting against champions Costa Rica in the same tournament round.
