The first Group to fulfill all the opening fixtures for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Group A produced some of the tournament’s most stunning—and controversial—moments yet. Host nation Brazil had no problems advancing through the next stage especially that their talisman, Neymar, ended up being one of the top favorites to bag the Golden Boot award by the tilt’s conclusion. Mexico, who booked their ticket to the finals on an otherwise rocky road trip in the qualifications, would be joining their South American group-mates in the Knockout stage.

Croatia trailed Mexico with one win and two losses while Cameroon will head straight back to their continent following a heartbreaking last-spot finish in the Group stage with zero wins. As for individual players, Neymar scored the most number of goals. He struck a brace in the curtain raiser as well as in his country’s last fixture. Peralta, Marquez, Guardado, and Hernandez all scored for Mexico while Marcelo, Olic, Mandzukic, and Perisic all provided points for Croatia, with the latter netting two goals. Cameroon’s Matip was the only player to grab a goal for the CAF side.

The last four matches from this group only produced one clean sheet, which was obtained by Croatia against Cameroon 0-4 at the Arena da Amazonia. Brazil and Mexico, meanwhile, played out a goalless draw which excellently displayed both of the Latin American teams’ unparalleled defenses.

In the Round of 16, the group winners will face an even tougher challenge. Brazil will brawl against fellow South American side Chile while Mexico will be pitted against Group B champions Netherlands.
