Reinaldo Rueda: Elite Talents are integral to Ecuador’s Success

“We don’t have [recent] World Cup experience but we do have a great squad with lots of motivation and we’ll have to make up for that lack of experience with order, obedience, and great tactical discipline,” said Reinaldo Rueda, the Ecuador national football team’s head coach.

Although he has never been a professional football player—very unusual for a manager—Rueda has proven many times that he can effectively run large ships. The Colombia native rose to prominence after leading the country’s youth squad into strong finishes at the 2003 FIFA World Youth Championship and the U-17 World Cup.            An international coach, he has served as top brass for a few Latin American senior teams other than Colombia, which include Honduras (who, under his tutelage, succeeded in gaining a place in the 2010 FIFA World Cup), and presently, Ecuador.

Rueda took on the leadership for La Tri in 2011 and delivered impressively throughout the qualifications. He does comprehensive study on his men’s opponents, taking down notes to the last detail for him to achieve a broad perspective of how the opposition works in comparison to his own squad. At the FIFA World Cup 2014, he might still use the same tactical plan against all three Group opponents that served Ecuador well in the South American qualifiers.

The Ecuador team would show brisk attempts at making a mark in Brazil to honor Cristian Benitez, the prolific striker who unexpectedly died last year from heart failure in Qatar where he was playing club football. He had contributed four goals in the qualifiers.

It would be hard for Rueda to find “another” Benitez but he is confident that what’s left in the ensemble would still be enough to stun and subdue their nemeses in the upcoming FIFA competition.
