Former El Nacional striker, Christian “Chucho” Benitez suddenly dies of cardiac arrest. The young Ecuadorian star was only 27.

Shortly after making his debut in El Jaish at Doha, Benitez complained of severe stomach pains. He was immediately taken to the hospital, but Benitez eventually succumbed to heart attack.

More popularly known as “Chucho,” Benitez was regarded as one of Ecuador national football team’s leading striker. The 24th goal that he scored makes him the country’s third highest scorer.

Prior to his transfer to Qatar, Chucho was a prominent figure in Club América. Not only was he the club’s scoring machine, he also helped the squad clinch the silverware in Mexico’s Torneo Clausura.

News of the former Birmingham player spread like fire over the online world. Condolences from supporters and fellow footballers poured. Radamel “El Tigre” Falcao was among those popular players who expressed his grief over Chucho’s death. Falcao went head to head with Chucho during the World Cup qualifying match between Ecuador and Columbia. Ecuador won the said match.

FIFA President, Sepp Blatter was also saddened by Benitez’s sudden demise.

Son of former footballer and Ecuador’s unbeaten top scorer, Ermen Benitez, Chucho followed his father’s footsteps and entered El Nacional in 2004. In 2008, he joined Santos Laguna where he got his first Clausura trophy and was awarded as the best player. A year after, he played for Birmingham City, then returned to Santos in 2011. Last year, Benitez joined the Club América squad and later on moved to El Jaish.

Due to Chucho’s contributions, Chiriboga Acosta, President of the Ecuadorian Football Federation decided to name the main pitch of the national team’s training ground, after Benitez.
