Netherlands earn clean sheet against Brazil, finish third

Although they can no longer have the chance to get a grasp of the 2014 FIFA World Cup trophy, Netherlands pulled off a stunning victory over Brazil in the third place play-off. Robin van Persie, Daley Blind, and Georginio Wijnaldum earned one goal apiece to earn a clean sheet and deny Brazil from escaping double defeat.

Brazil failed to make a good comeback following their tremendous upset from Germany. Incurring two losses in a row on their own soil was way too off for the five-time champions, let alone be thumped by a side that have yet to obtain the championship. Netherlands showed class and style while firing enough power to overshadow their South American foes.

The Netherlands kicked off things with a reasonably comfortable strike from Persie with just three minutes into the match. The Brazilians strove to get the ball into their possession and convert a goal, but none of their efforts went through. Especially that their star player Neymar was out to injury, Selecao had a hard time finding the net. And that dilemma escalated even more when Blind made the scoring 2-0 in the 17th minute. As if the murder was not yet that fatal, Winjnaldum made the most out of the extra time and struck to seal the battle in a three-goal clean sheet.

Netherlands’ loss to Argentina was heartbreaking as they almost made it through the finals had they delivered the goals in the penalty shoot-out. Oranje played Albiceleste to a 0-0 deadlock through 120 minutes, but just did not have enough to win the decisive penalties.
