(Minnow) Algeria Threatens To Make A Huge World Cup Surprise

(Minnow) Algeria Threatens To Make A Huge World Cup Surprise

Algeria may be the least favorite of World Cup bets, but their recent performance show that they can feature in the awaited tournament. Even the football legend, Pele, stressed that the Fennec Foxes can be a big “surprise” in the said event.

In a friendly against Slovenia, Algeria showed that they cannot be underestimated in the competition. Goals from Soudani and Saphir Sliti Taider sealed the fate of poor Slovenia, which was unable to respond.

It took Algeria quite some time before they can return to the tournament. Since their last appearance in 1986, where they lasted only until the first round, the squad had to wait for sixteen (16) years before they were able to return last 2010. Four (4) years later, the Fennec Foxes have successfully qualified in the tournament again.

The lack of exposure, which, readily translates to a limited experience is probably one of the reasons behind calling the squad as the match’s minnow. Yet in a press conference, Pele stressed that “football is not an accurate science.” Pele went on to explain that there are concrete examples in the World Cup in which a less popular team transformed into a deadly dark horse.
A testament to such argument can be seen in the 1986 victory of France over Brazil and of course, Algeria’s great upset against the Germans in 1982. And with the way they trampled Slovenia, Pele’s comment is fast becoming a prophetic statement.

Algeria will soon fly to Switzerland for their massive training camp in May prior to entering Brazil.
