Matured And Improved Switzerland May Upset Big Teams

Members of the Swiss national football team expressed their confidence in the squad’s ability to impress in the 2014 World Cup. This is despite the apparent lack of silverware under its belt and belonging to a competitive group comprised of France, Honduras and Ecuador.

Stephan Lichtsteiner, a regular starter for the recently crowned Serie A champion, Juventus, shared that Switzerland is capable of upsetting “big teams” in the said competition. And perhaps, Lichtsteiner was right in his argument.
Despite the criticisms thrown at their current FIFA rank (they occupy the 6th spot), the youthful energy and the hidden potential, waiting to be tapped and fully exploited are two of the squad’s greatest strengths. A concrete manifestation of this ideal is directly manifested through Xherdan Shaqiri.

At twenty-two (22), the celebrated Bayern Munich midfielder has done wonders in the squad. He is one of the prominent figures, which ensured that the Swiss contingent secures its World Cup berth without experiencing a single defeat during the qualifiers. However, despite the magic that he has shown in the pitch, he still needs to fight for a regular role in Pep Guardiola’s starting XI.

But fresh legs and energy alone hardly makes a champion and Lichtsteiner knows it well. He explained that the squad needs to be more “consistent” in all of their matches. They cannot afford to settle for mediocre displays as this will barely help them achieve their goals.

Although inconsistency remains to be a pressing problem for the squad, it looks like the squad can easily resolve this dilemma today than before. Premier League bound defender, Philippe Senderos stressed that the Rossocrociati has “matured and improved.” These developments will see them through their world cup matches.

There is no doubt that Switzerland has plenty to prove. Nevertheless, with their character and determination, etching their name into world cup history is a possibility that is bound to happen.
