Mario Yepes: The Core Of Colombia’s Winning Mentality

Mario Yepes: The Core Of Colombia’s Winning Mentality

In December 17, 2013, Mario Yepes announced his retirement after helping Colombia secure its World Cup berth. For those who knew him well and followed his rise to stardom, the said announcement was heartwarming and disappointing at the same time. Heartwarming for it was a statement of a great warrior who wants to dedicate his remaining time for a noble cause. And of course, it was disappointing for his great spectacles on the pitch will be definitely missed.

Yepes was Cortulua’s talismanic striker when his leadership skills were noticed. The ability to take control of the squad and at the same time, deliver goals paved way for his transfer in the Deportivo Cali in 1998. The move proved to be beneficial to Yepes’ career. He got a bigger stage and more opportunities cropped out. This is most especially true when he helped the squad clinched the most coveted silverware.

But Yepes’ stay in the club did not last. Just like the rest of great football players, he transferred to another squad in 1999. This time around, he rendered his services to River Plate where he shone once again. His entry witnessed the club clinched an Apertura and Clausura.

In that same year, he was also given the responsibilities of spearheading Tricolor. And in 2001, Yepes was one of the jubilant winners of Copa America. As soon as he transferred to Paris Saint Germain (PSG), he was also a prominent figure that helped the club secure the French Cup and Coupe de Ligue.

Clearly, Yepes is born to win and not only that, he shares his winning mentality to his beloved team mates. Yepes had stints in other clubs after staying at PSG. He helped Chievo Verona secured its Serie A status and afterwards played in AC Milan.

With all the achievements that make up his impressive resume, there is no question that Mario Yepes is the perfect one to lead the Colombian squad in its upcoming World Cup matches.
