Katsouranis: Division In Greek Camp, Untrue

Kostas Katsouranis, who is also the vice-captain of the Greek contingent for Brazil denied allegations of divisions within the Greek camp. This was after the so-called “derby of the eternal enemies” almost led to a fistfight between him and Giannis Maniatis.

According to Katsouranis, he already discussed the matter to Maniatis. He also admitted that the incident was a total mistake. He added that since he is one of the national squad’s senior members, much of the responsibility of what transpired during the said scenario fell unto his shoulder. Katsouranis also explained that there “no hard feelings” exist between him and Maniatis.

Striker, Fanis Gekas also supported Katsouranis’ claims, stating that there is “nothing to worry” in the Greek squad and that the “climate” within their camp will always be good. He added that the members of the national team are like a family and their performance will readily depend on their attitude.

Concerns over the division in the Greek squad became the center of attention as the incident is quite unexpected. Greece is known for their tight and cohesive traits, which have been their main strengths during the qualifiers.

The derby of the eternal enemies takes place between Olympiacos where Maniatis plays and Panathinaikos where Katsouranis is one of the prominent figures. The rivalry between the two transcends beyond football. It is deeply rooted from socio cultural and political discrepancies that are heavily expressed on the pitch.

With the recent match that took place between the two clubs, Katsouranis received a booking that sent him out of the pitch and almost ended in a duel between him and Maniatis.

Greece is grouped with Colombia, Ivory Coast, Japan and is valued to win at profitable world cup betting odds of 9.
