FIFA World Cup update: Uruguay optimistic of Luis Suarez’ participation in the finals

Liverpool striker and the Uruguay national team’s top scorer Luis Suarez is still recuperating from the knee injury he incurred from playing in the English Premier League, raising concerns of his participation in the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Team doctor Alberto Pan stated that Suarez is “evolving well” after the rehabilitation but did not give full assurance that the player would be fully recovered in time for the Brazil event. If he fails to make the cut, Suarez would be a major blow for Uruguay and a potential advantage for other Group D contenders Costa Rica, Italy, and England.

Suarez would be heavily devastated if he will not be able to go to Brazil due to his meniscus damage, but medical results since his surgery are showing very good signs that he will not be ruled out of the ensemble.

“The core of the concept of his return was expressed in the initial statement made in the immediate post-operative period and we can happily say that Luis’ participation in the World Cup is not ruled out,” Pan told a press conference in Montevideo. “It is very risky to give exact dates. We cannot have absolute certainty or clear numbers but the postoperative period has been very good.”

To ensure Suarez’s complete recovery, team manager Oscar Tabarez has encouraged the forward to continue with his rehabilitation until he is fully fit to be part of Los Charrúas’ final slate. He is not rushing him back and would rather wait than put the player’s health at risk.

Uruguay will play against Costa Rica on 15 June before they face England in Sao Paolo four days later.
