FIFA World Cup update: Tehran police deprives Iranians of World Cup broadcasts

With the Iranian police force banning the broadcast of the World Cup at the cafes and restaurants in the capital city Tehran, many supporters were left with fewer options at watching the matches in Brazil. Even the fixtures involving the national team will not be screened. Theatres and cinemas are prohibited from showing the matches either.

The Union of Tehran Cafe Owners has required its members to ensure that programming in their televisions will veer away from any FIFA show and that programs must be set in a different channel. Text messages and other forms of digital communications were sent to cafes and restaurants telling them to end their daily operations by midnight.

However, reports have surfaced that some eateries would still take the risk of setting their channels to World Cup programs—schedules have even been announced. A union of Iranian restaurants said that their affiliates may wish to pursue their plan but must take extra precaution and be able to control the crowd.

Spectators may not be able to watch the matches in the food centers but they are not totally devoid of witnessing the world’s most important football event. They can still follow their favorite team or teams through the Iranian TV and some large screens set up in public spaces such as parks.

Iran kicks off with a fixture against Nigeria on 16 June, and is due to play Argentina and Bosnia-Hercegovina later in June.
