FIFA World Cup update: Switzerland’s melting pot slate and their World Cup waltz

FIFA World Cup update: Switzerland’s melting pot slate and their World Cup waltz

Switzerland may not be a part of the European Union; it was also one of last countries to join the United Nations. Yet, the Alpine nation is surprisingly multi-cultural. Its most cosmopolitan cities have given birth to a new stock of Swiss talents, and many of them have successfully acclimatized to the local culture. Its soccer team, notable for the variety of player backgrounds, is a good proof to that.

Schweizer Nati is a melting pot of culturally diverse players yet they do not seem to lose national identity. There is a strong core principle that holds the players together in spite of their differences. In fact, this translates very well into their overall form in world competitions throughout the years. Although pegged as a “boring team” for often ending up in a draw against their competitors (best example would be their 0-0 deadlock on extra time against Ukraine in 2006), Switzerland are nevertheless consistent with their displays—regardless of who comprise the ensemble.

Of the recently concluded European qualifications for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Switzerland proved to the world that they, too, can be monstrous scorers. The eventually finished the competitions with the likes of Iceland, Slovenia, Norway, Albania, and Cyprus succumbing to their prowess at least in one of their matches. Their success put them in the high bars of the FIFA World Rankings, placing eighth overall—ahead of perennial favorites Italy and England.

Qualifying for the finals, Ottmar Hitzfeld’s squad were seeded in a manageable cluster for the Group stage—against Ecuador, Honduras, and France. The diverse pedigree of the team, along with an outstanding teamwork, could ensure the Alpine side with a ticket at least to the quarterfinals.
