FIFA World Cup update: Captain Shirokov out of Russian squad

FIFA World Cup update: Captain Shirokov out of Russian squad

A major blow to Russia’s 2014 FIFA World Cup campaign, the ruling out of team captain Roman Shirokov will prove hostile against the side’s scoring potential. The versatile midfielder was removed from the slate because he was not able to recover fully from his knee ligament injury. He is set to undergo surgery in Finland.

Shirokov has scored a total of 12 goals in 41 international appearances since making his debut in 2008.

“Shirokov is a very important member of Russia’s squad but I hope that the rest of the players will be able to perform at their best level in Brazil anyway,” said team manager Fabio Capello.

With fitness barely in tip-top shape, Shirokov was not seen in Russia’s friendlies against Slovakia and Norway. He did train with the squad last week but suffered a relapse once again. With his absence in the World Cup now sealed, the 32-year-old midfielder will be replaced by Pavel Mogilevets.

“Mogilevets will replace Shirokov in our squad but we still have time before 15 June to make final changes in the squad’s line-up,” the coach added.

Capello was England’s coach in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and was able to bring the side to the knockout stage. Now in charge of Russia, he is tasked with a difficult challenge of turning the tides after Shirokov, whom he considers a major talent, is unable to join the team in Brazil. The coach, nevertheless, is determined to make the most out of his current ensemble. In fact, his men would play one more warm-up match against Sao Paulo state champions Ituano on 11 June.

Russia will open their World Cup campaign against South Korea on 18 June. They are also cluster-mates with Belgium and Algeria in Group H.
