FIFA World Cup update: Prandelli names Italy’s final lineup

FIFA World Cup update: Prandelli names Italy’s final lineup

Italy will be flying to Brazil for the 2014 FIFA World Cup without Giuseppe Rossi and Riccardo Montolivo on the plane after Casare Prandelli removed the said players from his 23-man squad. Injury problems and failure to show sufficient form were the main reasons for Rossi and Montolivo, which can be very understandable considering the hifalutin nature of the World Cup. In their stead, Napoli winger Lorenzo Insigne joins Mario Balotelli and Ciro Immobile in the attacking powerhouse.

Rossi tried to convince his coach to include him in the squad but to no avail. The boss found him physically unfit for the Brazil tournament following a half-season Serie A campaign marred by injury. Prandelli opted for Antonio Cassano instead. Montolivo, meanwhile, had to be removed from the slate after suffering a broken leg during the friendly against Ireland at Craven Cottage.

Other players also left out by the former Fiorentina manager include defenders Christian Maggio and Manuel Pasqual, midfielder Rômulo, as well as forward Mattia Destro. Andrea Ranocchia has been retained as part of the reserve, with Prandelli making the most of a FIFA rule allowing him to change a player in case of a last-minute injury.

Gli Azzurri’s final 23 players are as follows:

Goalkeepers: Gianluigi Buffon, Salvatore Sirigu, Mattia Perin

Defenders: Ignazio Abate, Andrea Barzagli , Leonardo Bonucci, Giorgio Chiellini, Matteo Darmian, Mattia De Sciglio, Gabriel Paletta

Midfielders: Alberto Aquilani, Antonio Candreva, Daniele De Rossi, Claudio Marchisio , Thiago Motta , Marco Parolo, Andrea Pirlo, Marco Verratti

Forwards: Mario Balotelli, Antonio Cassano, Alessio Cerci, Ciro Immobile, Lorenzo Insigne
