FIFA World Cup update: Netherlands unlock Ghana defense in a pre-final friendly

FIFA World Cup update: Netherlands unlock Ghana defense in a pre-final friendly

An outstanding tandem of Robin van Persie and Arjen Robben, along with the prowess of excellent playmaker Wesley Sneijder, has driven Netherlands to bagging all three points against Ghana from a pre-World Cup friendly at the Stadion Feijenoord on weekend. Oranje only needed a fifth-minute goal to lord the tourney over.

The match came shortly after team manager Louis Van Gaal announced his final 23-man squad for the FIFA finals. Many commentators have considered the new Dutch national team to be the strongest in years and will certainly deliver in spite of being seeded in a very challenging Group stage cluster (against Chile, Australia, and defending champions Spain).

Sneijder played with Robben and then cut back the ball past the advancing goalkeeper to Van Persie who easily netted his second pre-final goal or his 43rd international effort overall. Robben could have produced additional goals for his team but lost control of some of his maneuvers that the chances slipped off his hand (or foot).

Ghana, who are slated to fight against Germany, Portugal, and the United States in Group G for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, had a difficulty knocking down the Dutch back five. Coach James Kwesi Appiah’s team were generally good in their defense except for the fifth-minute disaster they failed to manage well. Nevertheless, they finished the match with just one goal conceded, thanks to Robben’s misses and a strong pressure that disturbed the fluidness of the Dutch build-up play.
