FIFA World Cup update: Mexico suffer consecutive pre-final defeats

FIFA World Cup update: Mexico suffer consecutive pre-final defeats

With two back-to-back defeats in a span of just three days, Mexico look to be in danger of incurring a disastrous run in the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Their defense remains a major liability in their form, but it was rather surprising that in the attack, they too have some important things to wrap up. Miguel Herrera might be perplexed of how he should assemble his squad, but he must do it quick and accurate in order to avoid embarrassment in the FIFA finals.

Inconsistency is a problem for El Tri and it is pretty hard to determine which playing areas and skills the side are most capable. However, it is quite easy to pinpoint their flaws: a poor defense and an increasingly weakening attack. Mexico’s strengths and weaknesses change every now and then.

Friendlies against Bosnia-Herzegovina and Portugal–their two most recent opponents and fellow World Cup contenders–both rendered Herrera’s men goalless. The last forward to give Mexico a goal was Alan Pulido, who delivered an equalizer against the USA on April. The two follow-up matches, however, did not necessarily pot El Tri to shame. The duels against Israel and Ecuador were both victorious, but the goals came mostly from the defenders and midfielders, not to mention an own goal from their opponents.

Considered a major force for the Mexican team, striker Javier Hernandez failed to score for El Tri since the 2013 Confederations Cup. Equally popular player Giovani Dos Santos has not been very successful at creating Mexico goals in almost two years. Oribe Peralta, meanwhile, has an arid goal slate that he has not been able to replenish in six matches.
