FIFA World Cup update: Japan seen to maintain ‘clean’ World Cup record

FIFA World Cup update: Japan seen to maintain ‘clean’ World Cup record

In the past four editions of the World Cup that they qualified for, Japan have never received a red card. This indicates strong regard toward fair plays by the Samurai Blue. Coupled with a veteran and energetic ensemble, the Far East’s chance to survive an otherwise difficult group is quite plausible.

While Japan are among the oldest players in the 2014 FIFA World Cup based on average age, they are experienced enough to make up for their lack in youth. To fuel a more multi-faceted and dynamic brood of footballers, Japan has been sending its warriors abroad to take advantage of a highly competitive atmosphere. Many Samurai Blue team members now play for top European clubs, including Shinji Kagawa for England’s Manchester United, Keisuke Honda for Italy’s AC Milan, and Shinji Okazaki for FSV Mainz. Their discipline is outstanding, boasting of very low incidences of yellow or red card issuances.

Like many of their Asian rivals, Japan are plagued by a serious problem on inconsistency. The side lack substantial ability to effectively manage their form and although they sometimes produce stunning goals, they do not always end up completely successful.

As with the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Japan will once again flaunt their increasingly attractive brand of football. They are quite endowed in short passes and in dominating the ball. Unfortunately, they also have problems in the defense and in ball possession. Japan will be hard pressed to keep opposing teams from finding the back of Japan’s own net.
