FIFA World Cup update: Honduras succumb to non-World Cup opponent Israel

It seems like Honduras are having a string of misfortunes in the period leading up to their 2014 FIFA World Cup campaign in Brazil as they saw themselves incur two defeats in a row from their pre-final friendlies. Their most recent, against non-World Cup rivals Israel, inflicted them with 4-2 defeat. Last week, they also dropped three points for Turkey 2-0.

With a defense almost as fragile as glass, Honduras inevitably conceded several goals for Israel. Eran Zahari put The Blues and Whites on the lead in the 34th minute, which was later equalized by Roger Espinoza. However, between the 53rd and 74th minutes, the Levantine side were able to bag three successive goals—including an own goal from Maynor Figueroa—which have placed Los Catrachos in a very lethal situation. Carlo Costly rallied an 83rd minute effort for the Central American team but it was already too late to follow it up with at least two more goals to seal a stalemate.

Recognizing the recent upsets his team have been suffering from the warm-ups, team manager Fernando Suarez acknowledged the fact that his men still need some more encouragement to perform better. He knows that the players will be faced with uphill battles in Brazil and that he ensures Honduras will be ready in time for the finals.

“I want to tell the fans to please believe in the players,” said Suarez. “These are preparation games. We want to make the country proud, so please do not lose faith in us. We haven’t lost anything yet. This is just a game to put the players on trial and see how they are doing.”
