FIFA World Cup update: England’s double act still needs intense training

Coach Roy Hodgson’s team are building a new empire of tactical forces, but some of his plans still require further honing to fully maximize his men’s potential. One of these is his double act comprising of powerhouses Wayne Rooney and Daniel Sturridge. This axis has only started with two competitive games and have shared the pitch by just over 300 minutes. The attacking force is not yet fully developed, but Hodgson believes that Rooney and Sturridge would eventually create excellent traction just in time for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. If everything goes well, England will be other countries’ worst nightmare.

At this point of the pre-final preparation, England must already be doing intensive rehearsals and plenty of friendlies. A central force within the team is not yet definitely defined and teamwork is yet to be tested. However, the side are flooded by heavyweight talents and acclimatizing in Hodgson’s clinical aproach should not be a major challenge.

Many would think that the Rooney-Sturridge tandem is England’s principal strength. Rooney remains a top seed of The Three Lions for his signature bicycle kick and his scoring spree on abundant chances will be detrimental to other teams. However, he needs another major force to go along with his power. Sturridge is an ideal choice, and ommiting him from the link or putting him wide will steer mockery against Hodgson. Thus, creating their partneship will prove—hopefully—a wise decision.

England look best with the 4-2-3-1 formation, the very layout they used against Montenegro and Poland at Wembley late last year. Rooney was in the No. 10 role while Sturridge at No 9. These are their squad numbers for Brazil, pretty smart but they still need some caution.
